LAURINBURG — Scotland Health Care System’s front lobby is full of shining stars, each one representing a physician.

The stars were handwritten by health care system staff and visitors and each one carries a message of appreciation in honor of Doctors’ Day.

These handwritten messages carry two to three lines of appreciation in honor of Doctors’ Day, which is officially celebrated on March 30 each year.

Hospital visitors are invited to view the many hanging stars, which will remain on display until the end of the week.

Boasting 85 physicians in twenty-seven medical specialties, these dedicated providers are located throughout Laurinburg, Maxton, Pembroke, Wagram, and Laurel Hill in North Carolina, and in Bennettsville, South Carolina. Scotland’s medical staff remains a cornerstone of the Health Care System’s delivery of high quality health care and each one of these physicians is deeply appreciated.

Doctors’ Day officially kicked off on Monday morning with members of the hospital departments and the hospital-owned physician practices by showing their appreciation to their physicians all week long by preparing and serving them meals and presenting them with gifts and goodies.

“On behalf of our Board and all of our staff, I sincerely thank our physicians not only for what they do, but also for how they do it,” said Greg Wood, president and CEO.”Providing safe, high quality and compassionate medical care to our community.”

The celebration of Doctors’ Day is a national event.

The first Doctors’ Day observance was held on March 30, 1933, by the Barrow County Alliance, in Winder, Georgia. The idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and the recognition occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Barrow County, Georgia, in 1842.

Following approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush designated March 30 as “National Doctors’ Day”.
