LAURINBURG — A Scotland County School teacher has been arrested and charged with numerous sex crimes by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Meredith Bounds, the public information officer with Scotland County Schools, a parent notified administrators about “a potentially inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student at Carver Middle School.”
In a statement from Bounds, she stated that the teacher was immediately removed from the classroom and an investigation was started.
“The school system is devastated by the allegations of this serious breach of trust by an employee,” Bounds shared. “Our focus now is on supporting our students and supporting law enforcement in their investigation.”
Brianna Nicole Stanley, identified as the teacher in question, submitted her resignation on Thursday. She was in her first year of teaching with Scotland County Schools.
Bounds said that, also on Thursday, the school district received evidence of possible criminal misconduct by Stanley, which was immediately shared with the Sheriff’s Office.
“We have been informed that, on Friday morning, the teacher was arrested,” Bounds’ statement read. “Because this is an ongoing criminal investigation, the school system will not have further comment at this time.”
According to various reports, Stanley has been charged with three counts of felony statutory offense, five counts of felony indecent liberties by a teacher with a student, five counts of sexual activity by a teacher with a student and one count of third-degree felony child exploitation related to child pornography.
The student in question is reportedly 12 years old.
