LAURINBURG – Troopers are uncertain what led to an accident Wednesday afternoon on Old Maxton Road that claimed the life of a Johns Station man.

Arthur Wayne Whitt, 66, of Stewartsville Cemetery Road, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash, according to Trooper Ross Maynor with the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Whitt was traveling toward Maxton from Johns Station on his Suzuki motorcycle when the wreck occurred, the report said.

“He was traveling east and ran off the road to the right. The bike over turned; he was ejected off the bike and his body came to rest in the roadway,” Maynor said. “He was less than a mile from home.”

The accident occurred at about 2:51, the report said.

The fatality is believed to be the result of a medical emergency, but troopers will make a definitive ruling once the medical examiner’s report is released.

Friends say that Whitt was a widower, Army veteran and retired factory worker who was an avid golfer and motorcycle enthusiast.
