LAUREL HILL– The 22-year-old woman who died as a result of a single car accident at the intersection of Old Wire and Old Rockingham roads was laid to rest in Maxton on Monday.
Aliyah Shontelle Davenport, 22, of Old Wire Road in Gibson was killed in the early hours of May 9 when the driver of the 2004 Honda Civic, in which she was a passenger, lost control of the car, according to a State Highway Patrol report.
Four passengers were in the car with Davenport in the front seat. The car was driven by Terrance Smith of Oil Mill Road in Gibson, the report said.
Davenport was pronounced dead on scene by the Scotland County Medical Examiner, according to Roylin Hammond director of Scotland County Emergency Services.
Smith was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and the other two passengers declined transport.
An official with the North Carolina highway patrol said that speed and alcohol were factors in the accident.
The accident is still under investigation and a decision as to whether to charge will be made at a later date, the official said.
Davenport’s graveside service was at McLeod Memorial Cemetery in Maxton. She is survived by her mother Develon McBryde of Lumberton, her father Johnny Davenport of Laurinburg and 10 sisters.
