He was born in Laurinburg on Oct. 30, 1927 to Hugh Munroe and Marie Covington McArn. After graduating from Laurinburg High School he attended Davidson College in North Carolina. When World War II called, he volunteered and was accepted into the Navy V-5 program as an Aviation Cadet. Released from active duty after the war, he returned to Davidson College, graduating in 1949.
When the Korean War started, he applied for pilot training in the USAF and was accepted as an Aviation Cadet. He was a Distinguished Graduate of his pilot training class. He went on to fly a variety of jet fighters throughout his 26-year career including assignments in the Middle East and other parts of the world. He served two tours in Vietnam, flying the A-1 Skyraider and serving as Commander of the F-105 “Wild Weasel” Squadron. He received numerous honors and awards throughout his military career including the Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters. He was a member of the Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association and the Order of Daedalians.
He is survived by his wife Peggy, children Karen, Erin, Hunter, and Heather, and grandchildren Anya, Alesandra, Nicholas, Charlotte, Maddalena, Olivia, and Bryce. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Hugh McArn, his sister Jean Horton, and many beloved nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20 in Scottsdale, Ariz. A memorial service will be held at a future date at the Laurinburg Presbyterian Church in North Carolina.
He loved his family, his country, and the privilege of flying jet fighters. We will miss his beautiful smile and happy disposition. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Ariz.
