The area served by the city of Laurinburg’s electric utility will experience a scheduled power outage early Sunday morning to allow for a large piece of equipment to be replaced.

The outage has been scheduled for 6 a.m. and will last for about 30 minutes, according to a press release issued by interim City Manager Harold Haywood.

“A large transformer has to be replaced, so we are going to shut down the entire grid at the substation,” Haywood said on Friday. “It is the main circuit coming in, so the entire grid has to be shut down.”

While Progress Energy is replacing the transformer, Haywood said that the city will use the down time to work on some of its own equipment.

Haywood said that Sunday morning was chosen for the outage because of its convenience to the city’s customers.

“Hopefully there won’t be that many people getting ready for work or at work at that time,” Haywood said.

If everything goes as planned, the outage is not likely to exceed 30 minutes, added Haywood.
