The Scotland JV lady Scots’ squad that took the court at home Thursday night against Pinecrest was not the same squad that barely edged Hoke 37-32 less than a week ago.

Far from it, in fact.

Whereas Scotland committed turnovers and couldn’t achieve a consistent offensive presence against the lady Bucks Jan. 18, the lady Scots who showed up against Pinecrest appeared every bit the team that has remained unbeaten all year.

From a 17-point first quarter to a smothering defensive effort, the lady Scots pounced on Pinecrest from the opening buzzer and didn’t relent in the slightest to earn a 50-30 conference victory and move to 10-0 on the season.

“It was a much better effort through and through,” said head coach Linda Crosland after her team’s victory. “Even though they gave us some trouble in the second quarter with a full-court press, we got it together and never stopped playing defense.”

Leading the charge in her team’s first-quarter explosion was forward Qutina Everette, who scored eight points en-route to a game-high 21 points on the night. The lady Scots outscored Pinecrest 17-7 after the first quarter, which set the tone for the lop-sided contest to follow. Point guard Ashlyn Dial added 13 points in the game as well.

And while both Everette and Dial have been largely responsible for their team’s offense throughout the season, forward Breanna Williams got into the act Thursday night as well, scoring 12 points.

This upcoming Tuesday the JV boys and girls’ teams will host Richmond in a battle to determine who will walk away with a commanding conference lead. Games are set to begin at 5 p.m in the SHS new gym.
