Seven contestants will compete for the title of Miss UNCP on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Givens Performing Arts Center.

The 2013 Miss UNCP will receive a $2,000 scholarship, free student housing and a meal plan for one year. First runner-up receives a $750 scholarship, and second runner-up, $500. Non-finalists will receive $100 scholarships.

The theme for 2013 is “Continuing the Legacy…” This is the 61st edition of the Miss UNCP Scholarship Pageant.

The public is welcome and tickets are $5.

The contestants are:

• Brandi Chavis is a junior elementary education major. She will sing in the talent portion of the competition. Her platform is youth involvement in the community. Chavis is from Lumberton.

• Kelsey Cummings of Pembroke is a graduate student in the Master of Arts in music education program. Her talent is piano, and her platform is the ABC’s of Alzheimer’s disease.

• Comfort Johnson of Winston Salem is a junior mass communication major who is concentrating in public relations. Her talent is singing, and her platform is human trafficking awareness.

• Halbreonda (Hallie) McNeill of Kannapolis is a sophomore majoring in psychology. She will do a recitation in the talent portion of the competition. Her platform is the usage of cellphones while driving.

• Shanette Monk of Erwin is a senior digital art major. Her talent is singing, and her platform is autism awareness.

• Kyler Williamson of Shelby is a sophomore who plans to major in nursing. Her talent is singing, and her platform is the positive effects of mentoring.

• Ashley Williams of Charlotte is a junior social work major. Her talent is interpretive dance, and her platform is child abuse and neglect awareness.

Emcees for the evening are Michelle Braxton and Lane Ragsdale.

The executive director of the pageant is Cynthia Oxendine; director/choreographer is Zavery McDougald; Assistant Sirector is Frederick Stephens and business manager is Teresa Bryant.
