Two men have been charged in separate assaults from earlier this year — one of which lead to the death of one of the victim, according to police.
Lucio Vazquez Valdez, 54, of 207 McRae Street, was charged with murder on Wednesday in the death of Judith Patel in October, according to Lt. Cliff Sessoms of the Laurinburg Police Department.
Officers also arrested Exzavier Christian Isaac, 22, in the Sept. 20 shooting of Michael McLean outside Brothers in the Hood Market. McLean was shot multiple times, but his wounds were not fatal.
Valdez arrest
Valdez was initially charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury after beating his girlfriend Judith Patel in the home they shared. Patel, 63, was found inside the residence on Sept. 5 having been severely beaten, according to police. She was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital.
On Oct. 5, Patel was transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she died on Oct. 6.
The 63-year-old woman was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital and later flown by helicopter to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. She died there the next day, police said.
After conferring with the Scotland County District Attorney, police upgraded Valdez’s charge to murder on Dec. 5. He has been in custody since Sept. 5, and remains there under no bond.
Isaac arrest
Having issued a warrant for Isaac’s arrest shortly after the shooting, police arrested him on Dec. 1. Another suspect, a 14-year-old juvenile, was also charged for involvement in McLean’s shooting.
Isaac was charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, discharging a firearm in the city limits, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Scotland County Jail under a $102,000 bond.
