Both established golfers and those new to the game are invited to circle their calendars for the Barbara Sasseen Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held Sept. 22 at the Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg. In addition to other awards, a highlight of this year's tournament will be the opportunity to win a car with a hole in one on hole number seven.

Scottish Pilot Club President Sandy Carter is looking forward to the annual event.

“This is our largest fundraiser for the year, and all proceeds will help support worthy needs in our community," she said. "We will be giving away an automobile, courtesy of Scotland Motors and Wade S. Dunbar Insurance, to the first person who makes a hole in one on hole number seven. Everyone is invited and we promise a day of fun."

Sponsored by the Scottish Pilot Club of Laurinburg, the annual event will begin with a 10 a.m. shotgun start for all players. The tournament format is for four person teams, with men and/or ladies playing two low net best balls using a 75 percent handicap. Teams will be determined using a combined handicap total. Awards will be given for the longest drive and for closest to the pin competitions. Door prizes will also be given to players.

The tournament is named in honor of the late Barbara Sasseen, a Scottish Pilot Club charter member who is remembered both for her love of golf and for her involvement in various community activities.

"Barbara was extremely active in the Scottish Pilot Club, and she also started Relay for Life here in Scotland County," her sister Anna McMillan said. "It was her idea to start a Scottish Pilot Club golf tournament in the late 1990s. After she died the club decided to name the event after her."

Publicity Chairperson Sybil Sikes remembered Sasseen with fondness.

"She was energetic, well known by club members and was very well liked," Sikes said. "We miss her."

The entry fee for the Barbara Sasseen Memorial Golf Tournament is $60 and includes the green fee, carts, breakfast, refreshments on the course and an awards luncheon. Mulligans will be available at two for $5.

Entry forms may be picked up at the Scotch Meadows Pro Shop or at DeerCroft; interested parties may also contact Co-Chairs Debbie Grant at 280-8944 or Charlotte Pilson at 276-8680.
