Thanks to a local organization's contribution, more preschoolers will be able to take part in a week long safety program offered this summer through the Child Care Directions organization in Laurinburg.
"Safety Town, which is sponsored by Child Care Directions, is a 15-hour safety awareness and prevention program designed to provide age-appropriate, hands-on safety education for children entering kindergarten each fall," group coordinator Jennifer McArthur said. "The donation presented to us by the Scottish Pilot Club helps children who might otherwise not be able to attend the program. Their contribution is very much appreciated."
As part of the program, children participate in various safety situations in the form of games, songs, puzzles, stories and other scenarios that will teach them to respond appropriately when facing those situations in real life.
"An outdoor miniature town is incorporated as a way for children to learn traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle safety," McArthur said. "Police officers, firefighters, emergency personnel and other trained volunteers take part in teaching the children."
Other topics covered include poison, fire, animals, railroad crossings, buses, and strangers.
Debbie Quick, president of the Scottish Pilot Club, feels it is important for her organization to support other local groups who work toward the good of the community.
"Although we feel that our club plays an important role in the lives of adults and children in our area, and while our main focus is on brain related injuries and problems among children, we still feel it is important to help other agencies and groups in the community as well."
