To the editor:

Under the new health care law, we can help our state’s budget and our families’ budgets. North Carolina has the opportunity to provide health care coverage to a-half million uninsured residents beginning in 2012 at no cost to the state for the first three years and no more than 10 percent of the cost in the future.

By expanding Medicaid under the law’s provisions, taxpayers will find budget savings estimated at $250 million over 10 years. In addition, those eligible for Medicaid under the expanded coverage will have access to health care when the need it and not have to rely, as they do now in many cases, on expensive emergency room care. The election is long over and the health care law is the law of the land, So isn’t it time we use the money the federal government has given us to ensure North Carolina residents have access to affordable health care?
