The Scotland High School women’s varsity basketball team defeated rival Richmond Senior 68-27 on Senior Night on Feb. 15 in Laurinburg.

The Lady Scots kicked off the action early, showing why they are tops in the Southeastern Conference, allowing the Lady Raiders just eight points in the first half. Scotland put up 34 points in the first, more than quadrupling Richmond’s output over the first 16 minutes of action.

The lopsided rivalry contest clinched Scotland’s second consecutive outright conference title, a feat that head coach David Johnson was proud of.

“Senior Night is big,” Johnson said. “I’m very proud of how they came out. On occasion, in big games, some teams come out flat, but tonight we had energy and felt comfortable.”

Senior D’Andra Spinks led the Lady Scots with 12 points in the first half. Spinks opened the second quarter scoring three straight buckets to continue Scotland’s dominant play from the first quarter. Richmond’s only chance to get on the board in the second period came with 3:21 remaining in the half on a pair of free throws, but Richmond missed the opportunity at the charity stripe, going into the half down by 26.

The second half saw much of the same for the Lady Scots, as Scotland added 34 more points to end the night. Richmond found some success from the field, scoring 19 points in the half, but Scotland’s early first-half push was enough to put the game away for good.

Despite the high-scoring output from the Lady Scots, the highlight of the night came during a short scoring stretch from senior Jonissa Monley, who scored four straight points in her first game back from injury that has cost her most of the season. Fans and teammates alike cheered as the forward returned to the court.

“It all felt like a dream come true,” Monley said. “My teammates, coaches and parents all supported me and made this night special. I felt right at home back on the court.”

Monley was also recognized in the Lady Scots’ final regular season game for scoring over 1,000 points in her career.

The Lady Scots will look to continue their conference dominance in the conference tournament this week.
