Dorotha “Dottie” Jane McMillan died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 27, 2013.

Born in 1927, she lived in Asheville for much of her childhood. She spent many memorable days and weeks in Maggie Valley with her grandmother, “Mama” Campbell. After high school, she was employed by the Western Union where she was assigned to their Laurinburg office, becoming a lifelong resident of the area.

After her marriage, Mrs. McMillan joined Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church where she assisted in the nursery for ten years, served as a Women’s Circle chairwoman, and contributed her time to several church committees. In later years, she was a well known greeter at Sunday morning services and an avid contributor of her time and talents to the annual Ingathering.

She was well known by the Laurinburg community through her work with the Laurinburg Exchange, McNair’s Department Store, and the Plaid Piper. In her earlier years, Mrs. McMillan enjoyed participating in local bridge clubs and bowling leagues and helping with her children’s early school functions. She was a dedicated partner to her husband on the farm and a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Her family, including many beloved nieces and nephews, was her greatest treasure.

Mrs. McMillan was preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 63 years James P. McMillan and her younger son Douglas McMillan.

She is survived by one daughter, Jane McMillan Peacock, and her husband Joe of Lugoff, S.C., son James (Jim) P. McMillan, Jr. and his wife Judy of Laurinburg, and daughter-in-law Kaye Malcolm McMillan of Laurinburg. She is also survived by two grandchildren: Kate Peacock Williams and her husband Sean of Charleston, S.C. and Jay Peacock of Lugoff, step-grandson Ron Baucom and his wife Lynette of Laurel Hill, and great-grandchildren Owen Williams and Amber Baucom.

Visitation will be at Richard Boles Funeral Home on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, from 5-7 p.m., with funeral services at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at Old Laurel Hill Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at the McNeill cemetery directly following the services
