The Red Cross Celebrity Dinner and Game Night will return this March with something a little different.

The 17th annual event will include its unique brand of food and entertainment, but has added a way to allow more people to take part. The fundraiser is March 16 at St. Andrews University’s Belk Center.

The public can now vote on its favorite celebrity waiters and game show hosts by visiting the site american.redcross.org/CelebDinner2013.

“We’ve always had celebrity waiters and celebrity hosts” said Carol Ann Lentz, executive director of the Scotland County chapter of the American Red Cross. “This year we decided to go a little high tech and have the public vote for their choice. There are a lot of people who would like to be part of this event, but cannot attend. Now they can.”

Those going to the website can cast their vote after looking at video stories — some funny and some heartfelt — about why Red Cross volunteers support the agency.

Each vote costs 1. The videos are between 15 and 35 seconds.

“Your donation is tax deductible,” Lentz said. “You can vote as often and for as many people as you like. The Celebrity Waiter Group and Game Show host that has the most votes will be announced at the event.”

Scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m., the event offers a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy including games such as blackjack, craps, five-card draw, bingo, corn hole and a 50-50 drawing.

The evening begins with light hors d’oeuvres and will continue with the Parade of Celebrities at 6:30 p.m. prior to the 7 p.m. meal. At the end of the evening, you can use ‘fun money, i.e. play money issued at the dinner, to play games. There will also be a dancing as well as a silent and live auction, featuring a mountain home vacation, ride-along at Rockingham Speedway, and Panther tickets.

“We’re asking that people come out and support the event,” Lentz said. “They should also remember that tickets go fast so they should get them earlier.”

Last year’s fundraiser, which attracted about 330 people, was sold out. The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the local chapter, which serves Scotland and Robeson counties. Lentz said the goal is to raise $37,500. The event was just shy of $28,000 in 2012.

“This event isvery important in what we do in that it helps us respond to disasters and those in need,” Lentz said.

Tickets are on sale now at $45 and may be purchased from any committee member or by visiting the Red Cross offices at 501-A Westwood Way in Laurinburg.

Sponsorships are also available between $150 and $2,000.
