Richard Warren Weitzel, 91, of Chelsea, Mich. passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 at the Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor, Mich.

He was born and raised in Springfield, Mass., the son of Dr. Walter J. and Mabel M. (Thiele) Weitzel. He moved to Michigan from Laurinburg seven years ago, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Chelsea.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II and was discharged in August 1945 as a master sergeant. He worked for Borden, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio as a chemical and fire safety engineer, retiring in 1984.

He married Ruby A. Mabes in Danville, Va., on November 8, 1952. She preceded him in death on June 23, 2011.

Surviving are two daughters: Margaret Thiele of Chelsea and Nancy Mastie of Ann Arbor, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was also preceded in death by his sister Lucille Weitzel.

A memorial service will be held in Rochester, N.Y. at a later date. Private interment will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Rochester. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Arbor Hospice Foundation, Ann Arbor, Mich.
