The children of First Baptist Church will present the musical play On Our Way to Bethlehem on Sunday morning.
The public is welcome to the performance, which is part of the 11 a.m. worship service.
Directed by church members Susan Floyd and Kari Ricks, the musical recounts the ever-familiar story of the night Jesus was born and the wonder and awe that Mary and Joseph, plus the innkeeper and the animals must have experienced.
“This play talks about how, many times, it’s children that lead us, and so this story is being told by the voices of children,” Ricks said. “This is the first play where everyone’s gotten an opportunity to have speaking parts, from our youngest to our oldest.”
Songs, a mix of original music and traditional carols, include: “On Our Way to Bethlehem”, “Mary’s Song”, “Innkeeper”, “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing on High”, “Rise Up, Shepherd, and Follow”, “The Gifts We Bring”, and a carol medley that the congregation will join in singing.
The cast members include Alex Sutherland, Ryhannon Ricks, Cameron Utter, Sydney Howell, Kristen Howell, Zara Walters, Addisyn Andrews, Luke Sutherland, Ian Rosado, Gabby Rosado, Emma Raybon, Emily Floyd, Leo Ricks, and Sarah Rupard.
“We’ve talked in rehearsal about the children letting their lights shine for Jesus, and I think they’ve done this wonderfully in this play,” said Susan Floyd.
Members of First Baptist’s youth ministry will also assist with the narrations. They are: Leslie Floyd, Liza McIntyre, Diana Sutherland, Will Rupard, and Aleigha Andrews.
Production assistance will be coordinated by: Marion and Bebe Covil and John and Kitty Baum, props; Clara Hulon, costumes; and sound technicians, Kent Floyd and Kemp Stewart.
