Under the guidance of new a new choir master, Professor Ed Williams, the St. Andrews University holiday concert is expected to ratchet up the Christmas cheer this weekend on the school’s campus.
The free concert begins at 7 p.m. Sunday in the William Henry Belk Center at SAU.
The sure-to-be crowded concert stage will feature a 22-member voice choir, with students from 11 states including North Carolina as well as two exchange students from Ecuador.
“The Holiday Concert should be an evening of great family entertainment and fun,” Williams said.
Accompanying the group will be piano instructor and SAU professor Sean Moore.
“I have enjoyed my experiences this fall with the University Choir at St. Andrews University,” said Williams. “The students are enthusiastic and a joy to work with.”
Selections to be performed include a formal first section of sacred music including “O Holy Night,” performed as a duet by seniors Victoria Bickett of Louisville, KY and Park Hoey of Mount Pleasant, SC.
The second half of the concert is informal and contains familiar secular Christmas music. Emma Lowry, an SAU sophomore from Tallahassee, FL will sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” during this portion of the concert.
Featured choral selections will include: “For Us a Child is Born” by, Johann Sebastian Bach, “Angels’ Carol” by John Rutter, and “Carol of the Bells” by Wilhousky/Leontovich.
What has been called a “fun piece” by organizers, “Twas the Night Before Christmas” will also be performed.
