Laurel Hill is gearing up for its annual Christmas tree lighting next week.

The event, which is sponsored by the LaurelFest Committee, is planned for Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Morgan Street parking lot across from the Post office.

This is the second time the community has hosted a tree lighting. The 2011 event drew about 300 people.

“We had a great time last year,” said Lionel Sharpe, one of the organizers. “I’m hope we get a good crowd this year. We want everyone to just come out and support Laurel Hill and enjoy the spirit of the holiday with us.”

Participants are asked to bring ornaments to hang on the Christmas tree. There will also be carols sung by several Gospel choirs and hot chocolate served.

“It is going to be even bigger and better this year,” said Connie Coleman, who serves on the LaurelFest Committee. “We’re asking people to bring ornaments for the tree and a chair to sit in to sing carols. It should be a lot of fun.”

An added attraction this year will be lighted holiday decorations on utility poles in downtown Laurel Hill. Committee members and a workman from East Coast Sign Company of Laurel Hill spent about two hours putting up the decorations.

“With the generous help of residents we were able to collect enough money to buy lights for the first time this year,” Coleman said “We think these lights will add something special to the event and to the look of downtown.”
