Investigations into the death of a 22-year-old Gibson man have ruled the death an accident, authorities say.
On Nov. 1, James Weatherly and several friends were at his Marston Road home when a 40-caliber handgun that he was handling discharged unexpectedly.
“He thought he had unloaded the gun and he had not unloaded it,” said Sheriff Shep Jones. “It’s my understanding that he was an outdoorsman who had several weapons, and he worked with his weapons on a regular basis.”
Weatherly was struck in the head by the shot and died immediately, Jones said. His death has been ruled an accident by investigators and no charges will be filed.
The son of James Weatherly and Tammy Farris Weatherly of Laurinburg, Weatherly was a student in the electrical engineering program at Richmond Community College and a member of St. John United Methodist Church.
