The decision to move hundreds of miles away from home was not a tough one for Dr. Nicole Piatt Apple, the latest addition to the staff of Bowling Eye Clinic in Laurinburg.

Raised in a corner of Pennsylvania not unlike Scotland County, Apple said that relocating to the region was made easier by her familiarity with rural life.

“That definitely helped. I like it here already. Everyone has been super nice,” Apple said.

Most of all, the move was inspired by the opportunity to serve and by the proximity of her husband, an optometrist in Moore County.

Apple and her husband, Andrew, met in optometry school and were recently wed.

“We now live in Aberdeen with our big black lab,” Apple said.

Apple received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences with a minor in psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2008 before continuing her education at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where she graduated with honors.

The Bowling Eye Clinic namesake, Dr. J. Earl Bowling, has helped in introducing Apple to Scotland County.

“He recently took me to a Rotary meeting and has been eager to help me learn the community,” Apple said.

Excited about Apple’s decision to join the staff, Bowling called her a “great asset to the entire community.”

“We’re excited to have a new practitioner with such excellent credentials — an honor student at all levels and referred by multiple people,” Bowling said. “As most people know I’ve been looking for help for a while, and I am excited to have found such quality help.”

The addition of Apple will allow Bowling to take advantage of expanded exam room capability.

“The fact that she completed a pediatric rotation will assist us greatly with the smaller children and adolescents as well. She has a great interest in that and general eye care,” Bowling said.

Bowling Eye Clinic will be holding an open house through the Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce from 4:30-6 p.m. on Oct. 18.

“We welcome all to come by and meet Dr. Apple and take a little mini-tour of the clinic and to come in and talk to the staff,” Bowling said.

Bowling Eye Clinic is located at 215-A West Lauchwood Drive in Laurinburg. Call 276-1993 for information.
