School spirit at Scotland High School was already blazing coming into Homecoming Week at the home of the defending 4-A state football champions.
“We take football pretty seriously here,” said Anthony McKoy, escort of Fellowship of Christian Athletes homecoming queen candidate Greta Griswold.
The game itself, against Purnell Swett, will begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Pate Stadium, with the homecoming queen announced at halftime.
In the unlikely event that spirits aren’t high enough by this afternoon, students’ regularly scheduled fourth period will be replaced in part by a pep rally. With several competitions among the classes, students will have a good chance to warm up their cheering voices for today’s game.
“This year, we’re doing a tug-of-war, freshmen against sophomores and juniors against seniors, and whoever wins between those two will go against each other,” said junior Briana Brown, member of the pep rally planning committee. “We have a tissue wrap wrapping the teachers with two teachers for each grade, so whoever gets finished first, that grade wins. Then of course the other activity is whoever is the loudest in each class. We hope to get everyone pepped up for the game, and so far I think everyone’s really participated.”
The Homecoming Parade will begin at 4 p.m. today, starting at Church Street and proceeding down Main Street to Railroad Street.
The game and pep rally will bring a close to a week of festivities and an end to the campaign for 17 homecoming candidates and their escorts, as students cast their ballots on Thursday morning to elect Scotland’s 2012 homecoming queen.
“What really motivated me to run was my grandma,” said homecoming candidate Khadejah Bennett, representing the American Red Cross Club escorted by Artemis Robinson. “She was the first Homecoming Queen here ever. I’m a really outgoing person, and my strategy is just to be nice to everyone. My best friend is running, so I’ll be a good sport; if I don’t win, I’ll be happy if she wins.”
Students have dressed in differently themed outfits for each day of homecoming week: tacky outfits on Monday, wearing the same outfit as a friend for Tuesday’s Twin Day, dressing for success on Wednesday, imitating favorite celebrities on Thursday, and wearing class colors for today’s pep rally.
“Homecoming for the school as a whole gets everybody fired up for the football team and school spirit in general - it’s a good thing for everybody,” said homecoming escort Joseph Sojka, escorting Key Club candidate Kaylan Ganus. “We’re still kind of on that high from last year, though we’ve already lost one game. I don’t think we’re going to lose any more.”
