The two victims of a weekend murder attempt in Laurinburg are still hospitalized while their attacker remains at large, according to police.

Cheryl Medlin, 20, and her boyfriend Robert McRae, 30, have been in serious condition since Sunday, after they were attacked in McRae’s Morgan Street home by Willie Leon Jackson, 29, of Raeford.

Jackson, Medlin’s ex-boyfriend, beat both her and McRae with the handle of a shovel outside of the home, but fled when McRae’s mother phoned authorities. McRae and Medlin suffered multiple head injuries during the course of the assault.

“Det. [Rodney] Tucker went up there yesterday and they do show signs of improvement, but are still in serious condition,” said Lt. Marc Godwin of the Laurinburg Police Department.

Police are still unsure of Jackson’s whereabouts, but they say he could possibly be anywhere in Laurinburg or Raeford and that he should be considered dangerous. He is wanted for two counts of attempted first degree murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Anyone who has sighted Jackson or who has information about his location should call the Laurinburg Police Department at 276-3211 or Scotland County Crimestoppers at 291-3333.

Another domestic violence victim, Judith Patel, also remains hospitalized after she was attacked on Sept. 5 by her boyfriend, 53-year-old Lucio Vazquez Valdez. Patel, 63, is still in critical condition, according to Godwin.

Valdez, who lived at 207 McRae St. with Patel, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
