Dr. Utpal Patel has joined Integrated Pain Solutions in Laurinburg, according to Dr. James Taylor, anesthesiologist and pain management physician.
Patel comes to the local practice from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he served as an attending anesthesiology physician at Butterworth Hospital.
He is triple boarded in Pain Management, Anesthesia and Internal Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in advanced echocardiography and nuclear imaging at Columbia University in New York. His anesthesia residency was completed at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and Pain Medicine Fellowship at Rush University.
“I’m excited about Dr. Patel joining our group for several reasons,” Taylor said. “First, he’s board certified and fellowship trained in pain and comes to us from a very prestigious program at Rush University. His mindset and viewpoint on pain is very similar to that which Jerri Patterson and I have. Our practice is not all about medications or procedures but a combination of traditional pain medicine, cutting edge technology and movement therapies.”
The providers at Integrated Pain Solutions are creating a whole new model of pain care, which is a combination of anesthesiology and pain management.
“I came on board to do the interventional aspect of pain management,” Patel said. “Our program includes nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulations. Our decision is based on which procedure helps the patient the most. My job is to decrease the patient’s pain level with the intervention aspect so he or she can participate in the other modalities we offer. We utilize a comprehensive program of medication management, physical therapy, and other therapies. Our pain patients can’t be sedentary and we encourage them to keep moving. We’re hoping to soon be able to offer new modalities such as yoga, tai chi, massage therapy, and acupuncture in the Laurinburg pain clinic.”
