LAURINBURG — Laurinburg After Five will kick off the third concert in its series with the beach band The Entertainers.
The group will perform on July 15 at the James L. Morgan Recreation Complex on Turnpike Road. The summer series is sponsored by Smithfield Foods.
The Entertainers were founded in 1980 and scored their first regional smash hit with “Living For The Summer” that same year. The song helped propel the group to the forefront of beach music and led to their playing tin clubs along the grand strand of Myrtle Beach, corporate conventions, weddings and festivals from Washington, D.C. to Naples, Florida.
While the band is grounded in R&B and beach music, the group also performs selections from the latest top 40, classic rock & roll and country music.
Lead singer and founder of the band, Dawkins appeared on the show “Star Search” as a male contestant. The band also includes Beaver Robinette on the sax, Eddie Brooks on drums and Benjie Weaver on the guitar.
Not only does this band have a niche for beach music, they play a range of tunes everyone can enjoy including country, dance, party music, swing, and jazz as well as wedding music,” said Hannah Wilson with the Laurinburg-Scotland County Chamber of Commerce. “People up and down the coast reviewed the band applauding them for their ripple effect energy.”
Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the band will start at 6 p.m.
Admission is $2 and children under 12 will be allowed in for free. Organizers say coolers and pets are prohibited.
This year’s Laurinburg After Five series will continue on Friday, Aug. 12 and feature The Tams. The first concert in the series featured Jim Quick and Coastline.
