LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Board of Health has picked a Scotland County native to be the new director of the county Health Department.
Kristen Patterson will start on Aug. 1.
“I’m pleased and excited,” said Patterson, who lives in Hoke County. “I’m ready to get to work in Scotland County. I thank God for the opportunity to return home and serve my community.”
Patterson replaces Wayne Raynor, who has served as interim health director since March 2015. Her annual salary will be $69,888.
Patterson, who born in Laurinburg and lived there and in Gibson, is a 1997 graduate of Scotland High School.
“My initial plans are that I would love to meet with all the staff and do an assessment of the Health Department as well as go out into the community to see how we can be more involved,” she said.
Patterson, who has 13 years in the public health field, worked with the Scotland Health Department in 2008 as a preparedness and response coordinator.
She is currently employed by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as a public health advisor assigned to Scotland and Robeson counties. As public health advisor, she provides technical guidance and investigative assistance to the staff and community within these two counties.
Patterson was one of three applicants interviewed by the Scotland Health Board.
“We feel real good about her,” said county commissioner Bob Davis, who chairs the Health Board. “She has got a good deal of experience and is very energetic and appears to be a dedicated young lady.”
Patterson is also an active member of the Scotland County HIV Task Force and serves as an adjunct professor for Miller-Motte College in Fayetteville.
In 2007, Patterson earned a master’s degree in Health Service Administration from Central Michigan University-Fort Bragg and in 2001 received her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Exercise Science.
She is the daughter of Irene Patterson of Laurinburg and the late James Patterson. She has a son, Jordan Clark.
“I’m glad to be coming home,” she said. “It is truly a blessing.”
