Deputies charge cousin in Laurinburg student’s death

LAURINBURG — Authorities on Wednesday arrested a family member in the death of a 17-year-old Scotland High School student.

Scotland County Sheriff’s Office has charged James Chadwick Locklear, 24, of Boykin Lane, Laurinburg in the death of Kendrick McGirt of Laurel Hill.

Friends say Locklear and McGirt are cousins.

Locklear was charged with first-degree murder and felony conspiracy. He was located at a residence in Laurinburg and taken into custody without incident.

Investigators are searching for a second suspect — Albert Lee Anderson. He will also be charged with first-degree murder and felony conspiracy, the sheriff’s office said.

Locklear is being held without bond. He has been convicted of burglary, larceny, communicating threats and damage to property.

McGirt was killed on Monday at his home. Investigators have not released a cause of death. A funeral service for the high school senior is planned for Sunday, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Scotland High School gym.
