LAURINBURG – Cory Satterfield, an assistant superintendent with Scotland County Schools, has been named the interim principal at Scotland High School for the 2016-17 school year.

Superintendent Ron Hargrave made the announcement on Wednesday .

“We interviewed nine candidates in total, narrowed the pool down to three, but made the decision not to offer the job to any of the applicants,” Hargrave said in a statement. “When I met with the staff and students at the beginning of this process, I ensured them that we were committed to find the very best person for the job and that we would not place a person in that position just for the sake of hiring a permanent principal.”

Hargrave said the system will continue to search for “the ideal candidate.”

Satterfield replaces Jonathan McRae, district director of testing and accountability, who has been serving as interim principal at the high school since former Scotland High principal Greg Batten announced his retirement earlier this year. Batten said he decided to leave the high school and work as principal at Shaw until he could retire at the end of the academic year.

“I didn’t want to impede the search for or the placement or hiring of the new principal at the high school, so when the opportunity at Shaw became available, I felt that it was in my and the school’s best interest to accept it,” he said.

Batten had served as principal at the high school since 2013.

“It is my privilege to serve as interim principal at Scotland High School,” Satterfield said in a statement. “I am always willing to do whatever it takes for our staff and, most importantly, our students to be successful. My commitment to continue to move Scotland High School in a positive and progressive direction is unwavering.’

Although Satterfield will be active and involved during the transition process at the high school, his official tenure will not begin until July 1. Satterfield is currently the assistant superintendent for human resources.

Before to coming to Scotland County four years ago, he served for 22 years in Richmond County Schools, most recently as the Richmond Senior High School principal for seven years.

Hargrave said Satterfield volunteered to serve as Scotland High principal.

“He has an impressive background, not only as an administrator, but as a high school principal as well,” Hargrave said.”He is fully committed to the success of the high school and our district and we commend him for his willingness to serve in this important role.”

Satterfield was awarded the Principal of the Year in Richmond County twice and was the regional Principal of the Year runner-up one year and was the regional Principal of the Year winner in 2011.

His wife, Pam, serves as the chief financial officer for Richmond County Schools and they have two daughters, Taylor and Katie.
