ROCKINGHAM — A Maxton man is accused of assaulting and raping a woman in Richmond County last week.
Richmond County sheriff’s deputies say 24-year-old Dakoyta Lee Jones of 11638 N.C. 130 W. hit the woman and forced her to have sexual intercourse with him on Jan. 12.
A warrant for his arrest was issued the following day and he was booked into the Richmond County Jail without bond on Jan. 14.
Jones is charged with felony second-degree forcible rape and misdemeanor assault on a female. He is scheduled to appear in court on the charges Jan. 28.
Second-degree rape is a Class C felony carrying a presumptive sentence of 4 years, 10 months to 6 years, 1 month in prison for a defendant with no history of criminal convictions.
Records show Jones was convicted of possession of stolen goods and larceny in Scotland County in August 2015, misdemeanor larceny in Scotland County in September 2014, larceny of firearms and conspiracy to commit larceny of firearms in Robeson County in May 2014 and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury in Robeson County in November 2012.
Jones faces two pending probation violation charges in Robeson County and traffic infractions including speeding and driving while license revoked in Richmond County.
