Point rallies to upend Knights lacrosse

LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University men’s lacrosse team dropped their second straight conference game falling 13-8 to Point University (Ga.) on Thursday.

St. Andrews took a small 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from senior Nick Foster and junior Jason Lattof. The Knights used back-to-back goals from freshman Matthew Theobald to take a 4-0 lead in the second quarter.

Point scored its first goal with six minutes efore halftime, which triggered a scoring spree by Point to cut the Knights lead to one, 4-3 at the break.

After a goal by Foster gave St. Andrews a 5-3 lead early in the third, Point went on a massive 7-0 run to take a 10-5 lead midway through the quarter. The Knights tried to rally scoring two straight goals but Point closed out the game with a 3-1 run for the win.

Foster and Theobald led the Knights with three goals and two assists apiece for five points. Foster also led with 12 shots and also caused a Point turnover.

Senior captain Vinny D’Abbraccio added a goal and a team-best three assists for four points along with two groundballs and a caused turnover. Sophomore Sebastian Calmes managed to win 13 of 22 face-offs along with a team-best 10 groundballs and an assist.

Senior goalie Nick Levar made 12 saves for the Knights on 27 shots on goal as Point outshot the Knights 39-29 overall.

St. Andrews falls to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference while Point improves to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the AAC.

The Knights will remain at home to host AAC rival Montreat College on April 1 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day.

Low-scoring game doesn’t go Lady Knights’ way

LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University women’s lacrosse team played quality defense but was limited on offense against Point University (Ga.) on Thursday falling 7-2 to the Lady Skyhawks.

Point (4-9, 1-4 AAC) got out to a 2-0 lead at the break by outshooting the Lady Knights 10-9 in the first half. The second half saw the two teams combine for seven goals as Point outscored the Knights 5-2.

St. Andrews dominated in the ground ball category with 21 compared to just 12 for the Lady Skyhawks. Freshman goalie Erica Marlowe was the standout for the Lady Knights as she kept her squad in the game with her timely and terrific saves. Marlowe finished the day making 11 saves on 18 shots on goal while collecting a team-high four groundballs. She has now only allowed 13 goals total over her last two games.

Freshman attacker Savannah Midgley and senior midfielder Laura Deihl led the Lady Knights with goals on the day as Deihl kept up her quality play.

St. Andrews (1-4) will next be in action Saturday, April 1 to host Cumberlands University (Ky.) for Senior Day at 12 p.m.

Softball splits doubleheader

LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University softball team split their non-conference NAIA doubleheader rolled past Talladega College (Ala.) 5-0 in game one before their rally fell short falling 5-3 in game two.

Game 1: SAU 5, Talladega 0

Lady Knights’ senior starter Kori Ballard (6-8) combined with freshman reliever S.K. Brown to pitch a complete game shutout allowing five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Ballard threw five innings allowing three hits as she pitched out of a two runners on base with one out in the first inning. Brown struck out four over two innings and continues to lead the team with a 3.71 ERA.

The Lady Knights offense was led by Ballard and freshmen Ashlyn Dial, and Brennan Broadaway combined to go 4 for 7. Ballard led with a solo home run as she went 2-for-2.

After Ballard’s home run in the second, the Lady Knights added to their totals with two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings. Ballard now has four home runs and 21 RBIs on the year and is second on the team with a .388 batting average.

Game 2: Talladega 5, SAU 3

In game two, Talladega scored four runs — three earned — off sophomore starter Nancy Amos (0-3) on nine hits in just over five innings. Brown finished the game throwing one and 2/3 frames allowing two hits and one run with two strikeouts.

Talladega led 4-1 heading into the sixth before the Lady Knights scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings, but left the bases loaded trailing by two in the seventh to fall.

Offensively, St. Andrews was outhit 11-5 led by hits from Ballard, Broadaway, Santiago, Amos, and Hayley Volpert while Ballard, Amos, and Volpert drove in runs.

St. Andrews falls to 11-23 while Talladega improves to 9-19 overall.

The Lady Knights will head on the road to face St. Aug’s in Raleigh today and Montreat College on Sunday.
