LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University baseball team rolled to a four-game weekend sweep of non-conference foe University of Miami-Hamilton (Ohio). The Knights outscored the Harriers 42-16 in their weekend sweep.
Game 1: SAU 8, Miami-Hamilton 3
St. Andrews junior Trevor Maly pitched brilliantly for six innings allowing one run off five hits with seven strikeouts before allowing a two-run home run in the top of the seventh.
The Knights finished the game with nine players getting at least one hit including every starter. St. Andrews scored four runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. The Knights added four additional insurance runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
Junior Ryne Dickens and freshman outfielder Lee Poteat led the Knights with extra bases as Dickens had a double while Poteat hit his team-leading fifth triple. Senior infielders Tiger Miller, Trey Byrd, and Mikey Morgan all had a multi-hit game.
Game 2: SAU 14, MUH 5
St. Andrews rolled to the game two win behind a stellar offensive performance. The Knights scored runs in five of the six innings on 12 hits. Unfortunately, the team made five errors allowing Miami-Hamilton to stay in the game. The Knights put the game away the Harriers with a six-run sixth inning.
Sophomore starter Holden Drake (2-0) tossed five innings allowing four runs off three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. Junior reliever Zach Saylor finished the game for the Knights in the sixth inning. Saylor threw the final two frames allowing one unearned run off two hits and three strikeouts.
Eight Knights recorded hits in the game as five different players drove in runs.
Game 3: SAU 9, UMH 4
Miami-Hamilton (0-6) took a 2-0 lead in game three before St. Andrews responded by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second to steal the lead back. The Harriers scored to additional against Knights starter Austin Sisley to tie the game 4-4.
Jackson hit his third homer of the weekend for the Knights, with a towering three-run shot in the fourth inning to break a tie and give the Knights a 7-4 lead.
Two St. Andrews relievers closed out the game with three scoreless innings to compete the 9-4 victory. Sisley (1-1) finished the game pitching four innings allowing four runs off five hits with four walks and two strikeouts to pick up the win while freshman reliever Luke Nichols tossed a scoreless fifth. Sophomore Kaleb Measimer shut down the Harriers over the final two frames allowing just two hits with a walk and a strikeout.
St. Andrews finished with seven different players recording at least one hit as outfielders Lee Poteat and Ryne Dickens and shortstop Tiger Miller all recorded doubles.
Game 4: SAU 11, UMH 4
The Knights used a stellar pitching performance from junior Landon Kincaid to compete the sweep.
Miami-Hamilton got out to a 3-2 lead on the Knights, as they took advantage of five St. Andrews errors. The Knights came back with a combined nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to put away the Harriers.
Byrd led the Knights offensively going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. St. Andrews had seven different players drive in runs with Byrd and senior catcher Hunter Hackney registering extra-base hits. Byrd is hitting. 385 on the year.
Kincaid threw six quality innings for the Knights allowing three runs off seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts to pick up the win and improve to 1-2 on the season.
St. Andrews improves to 11-8 on the season with the four-game sweep and hosted Div. II Pfeiffer University on Tuesday to finish their week-long home stand.
