KANNAPOLIS — The St. Andrews University men’s Golf team finished ninth out of 12 teams in the Div. II Queens University Invitational at the Irish Creek Golf Course.
The men were led by newcomer, junior Joe Hurn, who made his season debut taking 13th out of 68 golfers. Hurn shot a 72 on the first day and a 77 on the second for a 149 total score.
Coker College, a Division II school out of S.C., won the invite with a 590 followed by Queens, a Division II school; Duke University, and four other Div. II schools: Barton, Anderson, Pfeiffer, and Catawba.
St. Andrews shot a 312 on the first day of the tournament and a 307 on day two for a team total of 619, which earned them ninth place. The Knights 307 on day two tied them for the third-best round of the day with Pfeiffer and Duke.
Senior Daniel Wieck finished 38th overall — second for the Knights — shooting a first round 81 and second round 76 to finish with a 157. Freshman Marten Lofas shot quality rounds of 77 and 82 (159) for a 46th place finish. Senior Carlo Stella wrapped up the scoring with rounds of 82 and 79 for a 161 to finish 47th in the tournament.
Other individuals competing for the Knights were sophomore Harry Smith and sophomore Caleb Hensley who each finished in 51st place. Smith shot two rounds of 82 for a 164 while Hensley shot 83 and 81. Junior Alex Austin also competed and came in 58th shooting back-to-back rounds of 83. Freshman Zachary Laws also competed and shot an impressive 75 in round two after not competing the first day.
The men are next in action on Monday, Oct. 3 and Tuesday, Oct. 4 at the AAC Fall Championship hosted by Union College in Pineville, KY.
