LAURINBURG — Tyrek Waters is a 5-foot 11-inch junior at Scotland High School. He is also one of the team’s defensive backs, wearing No. 30, for the Fighting Scots this season and has been named this week’s Special Teams Player of the Week.
Each Friday, the Exchange will feature one offensive, one defensive and one special teams player from the Fighting Scots, chosen by the coaches, to be the Players of the Week.
Tyrek had a key blocking during one of New Hanovers kick returns, that pinned the Wildcats keep in their own territory. This effort on special team’s earned him recognition this week from the Scotland coaches.
“Tyrek plays a big part in our special teams” said Bailey. “He really hustles and does a great job tackling.”
The 170-pound junior plans to attend North Carolina A&T University when he graduates to pursue a pre-med degree. Tyrek hopes he will be able to continue to play sports in college and hopes one day to become a family doctor.
Something people might not know about Tyrek is that is he likes playing football with the special teammates he has.
When asked what he is most looking forward to in the 2016 season Tyrek said he is looking forward to winning a 4A State Championship and getting a ring.
