LAURINBURG — Reinhardt is the odds on favorite to win the 2016 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) women’s soccer championship, according to the coaches’ poll released earlier this week. St. Andrews was picked fifth with 53 points — just one point ahead of sixth place Union.

St. Andrews gets their season underway with an exhibition game on Aug. 24 vs. Mount Olive before opening their year at Coker on Sept. 3. SAU is coming off a 10-8-3 season while going 4-4-2 in the AAC and making the semifinals of their conference tournament.

Reinhardt (Ga.) won both the AAC regular-season and conference championships in 2015, going 17-3-1 overall and 9-1 in league play. Reinhardt ended last season having advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament and ranked No. 25 nationally.

Receiving eight of the 10 first-place votes, Reinhardt garnered 89 total voting points to claim the top spot. Columbia picked up one first-place vote and checked in at No. 2 with 73 voting points, while Truett McConnell (Ga.) is third at 72 points. Truett McConnell collected the final first-place vote.

Tennessee Wesleyan earned 69 points and St. Andrews received 53 points to round out the top five.

Making up the rest of the field are: Union with 52 points, Point with 49 points, Bluefield with 29 points, Milligan with 25 points, Bryan with 23 points and Montreat with 16 points.

The 2016 AAC Tournament is set to begin with the opening round on Nov. 1 with the championship game slated for Nov. 11.

LAURINBURG — Union College (KY) is picked to win the 2016 AAC men’s soccer championship, according to the coaches’ poll released Monday. St. Andrews was chosen 5th in the preseason poll with 49 points, three behind 4th ranked Tennessee Wesleyan.

The Knights return a core nucleus from their 2014 National Tournament Team. The 2015 team, however, went 9-8-1 and 4-5 in the AAC making the conference tournament semifinals.

St. Andrews began their preseason schedule Wednesday with a game against Div. II rival UNC-Pembroke. The Knights will begin their regular season Aug. 26 at SCAD-Savannah at 7 p.m.

Union won the 2015 AAC Tournament and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Union advanced to the round of 16 at the national tournament marking the second straight year that an AAC team made the final 16 after the Knights did so in 2014.

Receiving eight of 10 first-place votes, Union collected 80 total voting points. Bryan garnered the remaining two first-place votes to come in second with 71 voting points. Last season, Bryan won the regular-season championship with an 8-0-1 league mark.

Reinhardt recieved 66 points, Tennessee Wesleyan earned 52 points and St. Andrews received 49 points rounded out the top five.

Making up the rest of the field are: Truett-McConnell with 42 points, Milligan with 30 points, Bluefield with 28 points, Montreat with 21 points and Point with 11 points.

The 2016 AAC Tournament is set to begin with the opening round on Nov. 1 with the championship game slated for Nov. 11.
