Registration deadline nears for summer youth sports

Staff report

LAURINBURG — The window to register children for the youth programs being offered by Scotland County Parks and Recreation is closing. The registration deadline for all three is Sunday, Aug. 7 and the cost is $15 per child.

The football and cheerleading programs will be for children ages seven to 12 and soccer will be for children ages four to 13.

Cheerleading will offer three different sessions — midget, cheerleading flag and minor — based on age.

The midget cheerleading will be for girls ages 11 to 12 and will meet at Legion Park. Cheerleaders will be issued a skirt and uniform top.

The flag cheerleading will be for girls ages seven to eight years old and will also be held at Legion Park. Athletic shorts will be provided for $10, but are not required. T-shirts will be provided.

The minor cheerleading will be for girls ages nine to 10 years old and will meet at Legion Park. Uniforms will be provided for the season and then returned at the end. Briefs will not be provided, but can be purchased at the Cheer Clinic.

Youth soccer will be offering five different sessions — U-6, U-8, U-10 and U-14. The cost is $15 per child and the registration closes Sunday, Aug. 7. All five sessions will be held at the Morgan Recreation Complex. Athletic shorts and shin guards will not be provided for any of the sessions, but they will be required.

The U-6 soccer program will have sessions for children ages four to five years old. The U-8 soccer will be open to children ages six to seven years old, as of July 31, and the season will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

Children ages eight to nine years old will be eligible to play in the U-10 soccer program. The U-14 soccer program will have two sessions for children ages 10 to 13 years old. The first will be U-12 and the second will be U-14.

Registration for cheerleading and soccer can be completed online through the Scotland County Parks and Recreation website, www.scotlandcounty.org/parks-and-recreation.

Information and registration forms can be found under the “Sports” tab on the left side of the screen. Then click on the link halfway down the page labeled “Online Registration.”

The three football programs — minor, midget and flag — are not available for online registration because players in the midget and minor league programs must weigh-in at Scotland Place or the Wagram Recreation Center. The cost is $15 per player.

No weigh-ins are needed for flag football, which will be for children ages seven to eight years old, as of Aug. 1. All football programs will be held at Legion Park. Flag football players will be provided a T-shirt, but parents must provide shorts.

Minor football will require a weigh-in because it is a tackle football program and those children ages nine to 10 years old must be within the 65 to 125 pound weight limit for safety reasons. Parents should note that any nine year old players weighing less than 65 lbs. can play flag football.

Midget football will also require a weigh-in, players ages 11 to 12 years old must weight between 75 and 160 pounds.
