Scots tennis competes in SEC meet

RAEFORD — The Scotland boys tennis team wrapped up its season this week at the Southeastern Conference tournament held at Hoke County High School.

The Scots sent a trio of singles players and three doubles teams to Raeford, but none of them advanced past second-round action.

No. 1 Shane Dubbs was eliminated by Pinecrest’s Aidan Temple, who won 6-2, 6-1, and No. 2 John Zhang fell to Lumberton’s Cole Lewis, 6-1, 6-0. The final singles player to represent Scotland was Daniel Johnson, who lost to Richmond Senior’s Brett Bowers 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles, the pair of Nyjel Collins-Jackson and Sam Poage were the only Scots to notch a victory during the two-day tournament. Collins-Jackson and Poage defeated Purnell Swett’s Jydor Locklear and Sean Gingras 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round, but fell in their second match against Pinecrest as the Patriots scored a 6-3, 6-4 win.

The Pinecrest duo of Pierce Strayer and Sebastian Ix dispatched Thomas Hopkins and Nate Dubbs 6-1, 6-2. Scotland’s other pair of Dawson Chavis and Drew Monroe were bested by Lumberton’s Josh Britt and Kevin Shooter 6-2, 6-1.
