GREENSBORO — Scotland County was well represented at the North Carolina State Championship of the USA Gymnastic Association in Greensboro on April 2.

Local gymnasts Kaelin Caulder, Addison Johnson, Lindsay Locklear and Jaia McCall competed against athletes from across the state in the three areas of floor tumbling, trampoline and the double mini.

The Scotland County girls brought home a total of two first-place, one second-place, one third-place and four fourth-place medals.

The four gymnasts are on a team of eleven girls at Physical Awareness and Gymnastics in Hamlet coached by Terry Barrett. In addition to their six hour weekly classes, the girls prepared by competing in several 2016 weekend events against girls from North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina.

To qualify for the annual state competition gymnasts must place in at least two sanctioned events. They compete in their age division for accuracy of routines that are predetermined into levels by the USA Gymnastic Association.

First place winners are invited to compete at the Regional Competition in Chattanooga, Tennessee for a chance to advance to the Nationals this summer.
