LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews University baseball team split its doubleheader against the University of Rio Grande Sunday afternoon, losing 7-1 in game one before rebounding to take game two, 18-5.

Senior Brad Monson started on the mound for the Knights in the first contest, and he shut out the Red Storm through the first three innings. However, Rio Grande tallied three runs in the fourth and Monson was replaced by sophomore Zach Saylor.

Rio Grande (7-8) added a pair runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to cruise to the win.

St. Andrews senior shortstop Rancel Rosado led the Knights with three hits while senior catcher Matt Malik added two.

In game two, the Knights exploded out of the gate, tallying eight runs in the first inning.

Senior Kyle Schade singled to right-center field for the first hit of the game, then Rosado doubled to deep right. Malik followed with a singled, bringing home Schade and Rosado. Senior outfielder Jeremy McDowell doubled to left, and junior Justin Williams singled to plate Malik.

Terrance Jackson’s sacrifice fly brought McDowell home, and after three more runners reached base, senior Tyler Radcliff tripled to plate a trio of runs. Schade wrapped up the inning with a single to left that scored Radcliff.

From there, St. Andrews tacked on 10 more runs and Rio Grande never threatened.

Freshman lefty Brett Ayer shutout the Red Storm on the mound, giving up no runs while striking out nine batters and allowing four hits in four innings of work.

Schade was 4-for-4 at the dish with a double and three RBIs to pace the Knights offense. St. Andrews (8-3) recorded 23 hits in the contest.

The Knights will return to the diamond Wednesday to host Voorhees College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
