St. Andrews overcomes first-half deficit to beat Columbia International

COLUMBIA, S.C. — St. Andrews University junior forward Alex Tharp erupted for 33 points and 13 rebounds to help the Knights score an 80-75 road win over Columbia International Tuesday.

Tharp, who was one of two Knights to crack double-digit scoring, was 13-for-16 from the floor, 4-for-6 from 3-point territory and 3-for-4 at the foul line.

St. Andrews trailed 41-36 at halftime but outscored the Rams by 10 points in the second half and led by as many as 10 during the final 20 minutes.

Junior shooting guard Titus Gary was the other St. Andrews player to reach double figures, scoring 15 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

Ben Johnson paced the Rams with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The victory was the Knights’ first away from Laurinburg this season, and they improved to 5-5 overall. The loss dropped Columbia International to 2-11.

St. Andrews is off until Dec. 29 when it returns to the hardwood to take on Charleston Southern in South Carolina for an exhibition game. The Knights will resume the regular season Jan. 2 when they battle Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee.
