RAEFORD — The Scotland boys soccer team saw its season end Monday night at the hands of a former coach.

Hoke defeated the Scots 6-0 in Raeford during first-round action of the Southeastern Conference tournament.

Bucks head coach Colin McDavid got the better of his old program as three of his players notched goals in the win. Marcos Osorio had seven points for the match, scoring three goals while handing out one assist. Vicente Ortiz tacked on two goals and David Williams added one. Edwin Andoney dished out two assists.

Scotland ends the year with a 7-12 overall record and a 2-8 mark in SEC play. As the No. 5 seed in the conference, Danny Gallagher’s team will not qualify for the upcoming North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A playoffs.

The Bucks advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament, where they were defeated by Pinecrest 4-0 on Tuesday. The Patriots will take on Lumberton in the SEC championship game Thursday after the Pirates upset Richmond Senior 2-1 in Rockingham.

Scotland girls tennis wraps up season

WILMINGTON — Atondra Ellis and her Scotland girls tennis squad wrapped up play last Friday at the state 4A East Regional in Wilmington.

The Scots saw their No. 1 doubles pair of Camryn Ellis and Anna Griswold advance to the second round at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center.

The Scotland duo defeated Cape Fear’s Chloe Arnette and Kaitlyn McCall 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round before losing to Pinecrest’s Chappy Ray and Claudia Ray later in the day. The Patriot pair eliminated Ellis and Griswold with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

As a team, Scotland ends the year with a 7-5 overall record and a 6-4 mark in Southeastern Conference play, good enough for third in the conference standings.

Ellis, the No. 1 singles player on the team, finished 9-3 this season, and Griswold was 8-4. As doubles partners, the two combined to go 10-4. With no seniors graduating from this year’s team, Scotland is projected to return its entire starting lineup next season.
