LAURINBURG — The St. Andrews wrestling team recently handed out its end of season awards.
The Knights finished their 2016-17 season with a 2-14 overall record with two senior starters in the line-up and anywhere from three to six freshmen taking the mat.
The line-up featured freshmen Zeke Lee (141), Noah Walker (149), Michael Nelson (157) were the Knights main young starters along with sophomore Aaron Vaughan (285); juniors Brennan Patton (125), Kavoris Perry (174), Tyler Evers (197), Argie Burnette (184) and seniors Jared Key (197), Tyran-Taylor Owens (141) and Devin Washington (285).
Wrestlers receiving awards were Jared Key for most takedowns with 36. In his final season with the Knights, Key finished with an 11-10 overall record. Tyler Evers earned the most pins award with seven as he finished the season with an 8-13 record.
Junior tri-captain Brennan Patton won the Hoover Warrior award, which is named after Justin Hoover, St. Andrews first All-American wrestler. Patton finished the season with a 12-14 record.
Sophomore Aaron Vaughan earned the Vaughan Outstanding Wrestler award. The award is named after his older brother and Knights assistant coach Denzel Vaughan who was a three-time national qualifier and two-time All-American at St. Andrews. Aaron finished the season with a team-best 16-8 overall record.
Freshman Mike Nelson earned the Co-Team Academic award along with senior Tyran Taylor-Owens. Nelson finished his first semester at St. Andrews with a 4.0 GPA. The Knights other recipient Taylor-Owen earned a 4.0 GPA with a cumulative 3.85 GPA.
Freshman Noah Walker won the Rookie of the Year award earning three pins and a major decision in his first season.
