LAURINBURG — The Fighting Scots tennis team tried to outrun the torrential downpours that hit the city on Monday — with no such luck.

Despite starting the match an hour earlier Mother Nature had no intention of letting the Scots and South View finish their non-conference match. The teams had just started the second sets in their singles matches when the rain started to come down.

Junior Ryan Phillips was playing first singles again for the Scots has senior Shane Dubbs missed his second match in a row. Phillips had taken the first set against South View’s Hunter Edkins, 6-2, but was behind early in the second set, 0-2. Scots second singles player Sam Poage easily won his first set over South View’s Tanner Burge, 6-0. Poage was ahead in the second set of the match, 3-2 before it was called.

Stepping up one court, Nyjel Collins-Jackson found himself playing third singles against South View’s Brandon McCann and narrowly won the first set, 7-5 before finding his groove and taking an early 2-0 lead in the second set. Nate Dubbs was playing fourth singles for the Scots and was just about to secure the team’s first win when play was stopped.

N. Dubbs won the first set 6-1 over South View’s Jacob Woods and was ahead 5-0 in the second set. Scots junior Jason Kang moved up to fifth singles to take on South View’s Chase Pope. Kang picked up a 6-0 win in the first set and was leading 3-2 in the second.

The Scots showcased a varsity newcomer on court No. 6 on Monday freshman Nicholas Murphy who was taking on South View’s Hunter Hicks. The debut was a successful one as Murphy won his first set 6-0 and was up 5-1 in the second set when play was stopped.

None of the doubles matches had begun and will be completed along with the remaining sets of the singles matches on Monday, April 24 at 4 p.m.
