Humane society to get boost from Champs

LAURINBURG — Customers and animal lovers who plan to enjoy a meal at Champs will be getting more than what they bargained for, now that the restaurant is set on donating 5 percent of its proceeds to the Scotland County Humane Society every Thursday.General Manager Jim Kitzmiller said the restaurant’s monthly donations to the J. D. & Fran Asher Animal Shelter is something they’ll “continue doing in the long run” as he presented a $430 check to shelter director Melinda McMillan on Thursday evening. He hoped this first check would be one of many to help support the homeless dogs and cats.

RALEIGH — Michelle Gray, resident of Scotland County, recently joined 21 others across the state as a member of the North Carolina Textbook Commission.Commissioners are appointed by Gov.
