UPDATE: Ratliffe still critical, but improving

LAURINBURG — Scotland High quarterback Jaylend Ratliffe remains in critical condition following an ATV accident Tuesday afternoon, sources said Wednesday, but has been taken off a ventilator and is talking and responsive.Sources close to the family say Ratliffe, who reportedly suffered brain injuries when the four-wheeler on which he was riding flipped, had a CT scan this morning at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was airlifted to the hospital Tuesday night.According to source information, Ratliffe and teammate Dakota Holland were riding together though the woods at about 4:30 p.m. when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn. Both were conscious and alert on the scene, sources said.

 

The $50,000 race horse

Last week, a stranger had just pulled up in front of Ol ’Charley’s store pulling a horse trailer. The stranger got out and marched right in through the front door of the store. He was a short, bow-legged fellow with a leather jacket that had enough rhinestones on it to choke a horse. He had on a wide-brim 10-gallon hat and fancy cowboy boots on with a set of silver spurs attached.
