Sunday in Park draws crowd

More than 1,000 children and their parents filled the Morgan Complex in Laurinburg for Sunday in the Park.

The annual children’s festival began at 2 pm on Sunday afternoon with crowds coming out to see a variety of performances area and visit booths participating in the event.

“This has been a wonderful day to hold this event,” said Benny Cox with Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families, the group hosting the event. “The weather is nice and mild today, which usually bring more people out.”

The first 200 children to attend the event received a free Sunday in the Park t-shirt donated by the following sponsors:

Organizations providing activities for Sunday in the Park included Scots for Youth, Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families, Girl Scouts, Grace Baptist, Word of Life Assembly of God, Scotland County Parks and Recreation, Scotland County Health Department, ARTScotland, Scotland County Department of Social Services, Scotland County Youth Center, Communities in School, Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, United Way of Scotland County, and Scotland County 4-H

Children also participated in face painting, coloring, soccer games, balloon art, Frisbee throws, free paint, and other games and activities through out the Morgan Complex.

Entertainment acts performed throughout the festival including performances by Grace Baptist Youth Ministry Band, IE Johnson Steppers, Morrison School of Martial Arts, Glamor Athletics, Elite Dance Academy, and Triple Toe Cloggers.

The Laurinburg Police and Sheriff Department brought there drunk driving simulator and made available many police vehicles for the display. Scotland County Fire Department, Red Cross, and Forestry Services also participated by bringing vehicles and equipment for display.

“In this 17th year of Sunday in the Park, it can truly be said that event has become a staple in this community.” Cox said. “This is a true community sponsored. It is a supported event that owes its success to the generosity of the community and the many people over these 17 years have made it such a success.”

Sponsors included: Communities in Schools, Dominos Pizza, First Bank, Grace Baptist Church, NC Mentor, Prestwick Village, Purcell Clinic, The BIG READ, The Help Line, Scotland County Parks and Recreation, Scotland County Partnership for Children and Families and the United Way of Scotland Count.
