A former High Point chamber official has been named president of the Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce.
Tonia Stephenson of Archdale will begin her new job here on Oct. 15, chamber officials announced this morning.
Stephenson has been the executive director of the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club in High Point for the past five years.
Prior to that, she worked for the High Point Chamber of Commerce for 11 years. While there, she served first as director of membership services and then vice-president of business development.
“I am so excited about calling Scotland County home,” said Stephenson.“ My husband and I are looking forward to joining this great community, getting involved, and making a difference. I plan to work with the board members and other community leaders to help move the economy of this county forward, as well as provide the best possible services for our members. Ultimately, together, we all can make this area an even more wonderful place to work, live, and play.”
A native of Asheboro, Stephenson graduated from High Point University with a double major in business and economics and home furnishings marketing.
Stephenson was named the High Point Chamber of Commerce Business Woman of the Year in 2007. She is past president of the Triad Women’s Forum and the YWCA Board of Directors and currently serves on many boards and committees in the High Point area.
Chamber Board Chairman Becca Hughes said Stephenson’s selection should be “a good fit.”
“She is clearly a relational leader, who embraces and tackles new challenges, is a quick learner and really gets involved in her community. She will be a good fit for our chamber and our county,” Hughes said.
Stephenson will replace Theresa Pinto who served as chamber president for nearly four years before resigning to take a job as president of the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce in May.
