Usually held in March, one of Scotland County’s longest-standing charity golf tournaments will be played next week.

Entries are still open for the 24th Annual Ebbie Lassiter/Jim Ollis Memorial Charity Golf Tournament, to be held at 1 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Scotch Meadows Country Club on Tartan Road.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Southeast Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Scholarship Fund, as well as the Red Cross of Scotland County. The cost to enter is $60 per person, or $50 for retired individuals over age 62.

“Our biggest thing is donating money to the scholarship fund in Hoke, Richmond, Scotland, and Moore counties if there are applicants,” said tournament chair Tommy Brigman. “For the last five years, Hoke, Scotland, and Richmond students have received scholarships.”

The tournament has raised an average of $10,000 in recent years, with the scholarship fund providing $500 to $1,000 to selected students.

Lunch, sponsored by Domino’s Pizza, will be served from 11:30-12:30 prior to the tournament, with dinner provided by General McArthur’s Restaurant following the day’s golfing. Both meals are included in the entrants’ fee.

Prizes will be given for closest to the pin on certain holes, with prizes for the longest putt on Hole 6 and longest drive on Hole 9. Participants will play 18 holes in all. A raffle for a two-night mountain stay will also be held during the tournament, with tickets available for $5.

Sponsorship levels are available from $100 hole sponsors to $2,000 platinum sponsors.

Players can enter in person at the tournament prior to tee time, or pick up an entry form at the Scotland County Red Cross office on Westwood Way or at Wade S. Dunbar Insurance on Atkinson Street.

The tournament is held in the memory of Jim Ollis, once president of the Laurinburg Jaycees, and Ebbie Lassiter.

“Ebbie Lassiter was a long time Red Cross blood donor and volunteer,” said Carol Ann Lentz, executive director of the American Red Cross of Scotland County. “We appreciate everybody who helps with this tournament. It’s been going on for a very, very long time, and we ask that everybody come out and enjoy a good day for a good cause.”
