Entertainment and socialization will be served with a side of local produce this weekend in downtown Laurinburg.
The city of Laurinburg will again sponsor a series of summer farmers’ markets in the A.B. Gibson Education Center’s parking lot, the first of which will run from 8 a.m. until noon today. Sponsored by the Laurinburg City Council, the farmers’ markets will continue every other Saturday throughout the summer.
Local crafts and produce will be available for purchase with squashes and melons from Lumber River Native Plants in Gibson and cream honey from Wagram Aviary among other vendors.
“We’ll have a lot of vendors that we had last year and we have a few new ones coming on as we go forward,” said Ken Spencer, mayor pro tem of the Laurinburg City Council. “We’re continuing and expanding.”
The pie contest featured at in one of last year’s farmers’ markets will be returning for 2012, and several new contests are planned to showcase talent from Scotland County and around the region.
“We’ll bring the pie contest back as well as a chili cook-off as it moves into the fall, and we hope to have a chef’s cook-off challenge,” Spencer said.
This weekend’s farmers’ market will also host a voter registration booth, so that voters of any party can be sure to have their paperwork in order in time for the July runoff elections and November’s general election.
In inclement weather, the farmers’ markets will likely be held in Laurinburg’s National Guard Armory. There is no shortage of space at either venue, and all are invited to avail themselves of the goods on offer or just live music and a collard sandwich.
“Last year we had about anywhere from 55 to 80, and this year we hope to increase that,” Spencer said.
