Service Thread Manufacturing plans to add 35 jobs as part of a $700,000 expansion in Scotland County, the county Economic Development Corporation announced on Monday. “Service Thread is a great company that continues to invest in not only their workforce but the entire community,” said Greg Icard, county economic development director. “We value them as a company and support all of their efforts in any way we are able.” The planned expansion will allow the plant to nearly double its manufacturing capacities in specially treated yarns for technical sewing applications, according to Jay Todd, Service Thread COO/ CFO. Service Thread, which has about 80 employees, produces industrial yarn. “This expansion is an important part of helping Service Thread continue our technical edge as we invest in new equipment to remain on the forefront of US manufacturing,” Todd said. “We believe in modern, progressive innovation through capital investments, employee education, and support for our local community here in Scotland County.” County leaders said expansions by existing industries are as vital as new plants locating in the county. “As a county, we feel honored that Service Thread chose to expand in Scotland County,” said Joyce McDow, chairman of the county Economic Development Corporation. “It certainly is an asset to have them here. They have been a viable and valuable presence in our community over the years. Their expansion supports the company’s investment in its workforce, new jobs for potential employees, new capital investment for the county and a working relationship with other entities located in Scotland County.” Bob Davis, chairman of the county Board of Commissioners, agreed. “Existing industries play a vital role in bringing new jobs,” Davis said. “We are excited that Service Thread chose to grow and increase their investment in Scotland County.” Laurinburg Mayor Tommy Parker called the announcement of more jobs good news. “Service Thread is a great company and this represents a substantial commitment on their part as they look to significantly increase their current workforce,” Parker said. Service Thread officials credited county leaders for helping make the expansion possible. “Working with Greg Icard, Scotland County’s economic development director and his team has been instrumental in our success here,” Todd said. “They understand the needs and challenges faced by manufacturing and work every day to give us a good environment in which to operate.” Service Thread expects its new manufacturing equipment to be online in the first quarter of 2013.
