Local Hospice volunteers recently prepared more than 700 invitations for a special event this Thursday.
But even a task that large is only a small part of what these volunteers do in support of Hospice of Scotland County, officials said.
“These volunteers are busy in the days leading up to the service, helping us with plans and baking cakes so we can offer refreshments for the more than 600 people we expect to attend the service,” said Denise Riggins, director of volunteers services at Hospice of Scotland County. “They will also serve as greeters and ushers at the service, and help with the nursery that evening.”
Thursday’s service will be held at 6:30 p.m., at Northview Harvest Ministries in Laurinburg.
Hospice of Scotland County’s annual Candlelight Memorial Service celebrates the lives of patients served by Hospice of Scotland County during the previous year, and is also a time to honor their families, friends and caregivers.
During the service, the name of each Hospice patient cared for during the previous year will be read, and their loved ones, friends and staff will be invited to come forward to light a candle in their memory.
“This service is a lovely way to remember those who have gone on before us,” Riggins said.
While the service is focused on those patients and families who have received Hospice care during the previous year, it is open to the public, and Hospice families from previous years are encouraged to attend.
Tanya Williams, bereavement coordinator at Hospice of Scotland County, expressed gratitude for the volunteers’ help and said the service is one of the highlights of the year.
“This is always a special evening for Hospice families and for our staff,” she said. “I would encourage anyone who is looking for a message of hope and comfort to attend.”
